Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Charleston SC
1242 AM EST Sat Feb 22 2025
.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build into the region through Saturday. A
weak disturbance will pass to the south on Monday, followed by
high pressure through Wednesday. A cold front may move through
on Thursday.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Other than scattered-broken, and mainly thin cirrus clouds
associated with the tail of the upper jet moving through, skies
will be mostly clear or partly cloudy. Surface high pressure
centered near the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains will be
the main surface feature, while a fast moving zonal flow
prevails aloft. With little or no winds, radiational cooling
will continue, offset little if anything by the high level
clouds. As such, lows will be down in the mid and upper 20s
inland, with even some lower 20s in Berkeley County. Coastal
sections will be in the lower and middle 30s.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY/...
Cool high pressure will prevail over the area on Saturday.
Sunny skies in the morning will become partly cloudy in the
afternoon as a potent upper shortwave approaches from the west.
Highs will reach the mid to upper 50s, except lower 60s far
south. As the shortwave moves through Saturday night, a weak
coastal trough will develop along the SC coast. A few showers
may brush the coastal areas Saturday night, but otherwise dry
conditions expected.
Temperatures will moderate somewhat on Sunday with highs in the
low to mid 60s. A southern stream shortwave will move along the
northern Gulf Coast Sunday night and Monday with a surface low
moving through northern or central Florida. There remain some
model differences with how close to the area the surface low
will track. For now we have isolated showers in the forecast for
coastal GA late Sunday night. Monday highs will reach the
middle 60s.
&&
.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Warm high pressure will prevail for the brunt of the long term
period. A cold front could cross through the area on Thursday,
bringing scattered showers.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
KCHS/KJZI/KSAV: VFR into Saturday night.
Extended Aviation Outlook: Mainly VFR.
&&
.MARINE...
Overnight: Under the control of continental high pressure, north
to northeast flow will persist, with wind speeds mostly in the
10-15 knot range. Seas will be 2-3 feet for the nearshore
waters and 3-4 feet for the outer waters.
Saturday through Wednesday: Wind direction shifts will be
common during this period as weak disturbances move through,
followed by rebuilding high pressure. Conditions expected to
remain well below advisory thresholds.
